Last Friday I talked to 40 IT professionals about SOCIAL STYLE. I talk a lot about the model, but it comes down to people effectively communicating and working together.
People are different. We have different needs, ways of doing things and preferences. There are so many things happening behind the scenes of the human experience that lead to wrong assumptions, miscommunication and stress. Empathy is key.
Depending on your needs, some people are going to rub you the wrong way. They are going to annoy, frustrate, intimidate and make you anxious.
So, is this their problem or our problem?
Most of the time it's not their problem. We don't understand our needs and stress triggers and we are in reaction mode. When people behave in ways that meet our needs, we feel good. When people say and do things that don't meet our needs we are insecure and stressed. This is life for too many people and it just doesn't have to be that way.
Self-awareness leads to better self-management. Self-management leads to better relationship development and an overall better experiences for everyone. But, for this to happen we need to recognize the opportunity and put forth the effort. Some will and some won't, but those that do experience the benefits within themselves and with others.
